Police in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region has arrested three suspects in connection with bloody clashes at Nkrankwanta.
The violence that erupted between supporters of the NDC and the NPP during the mop-up of the Electoral Commission’s voter registration exercises resulted in the death of one person with two others in critical condition on Saturday, August 8.
Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong, Bono Regional Police PRO, confirmed that three persons have been picked up to assist with investigations.
The three suspects arrested are Ali Musah, 33, Ibrahim Acquah, 33 and Amos Aning, 38.
Mr Oppong that police reinforcement teams dispatched to the scene at the time of the incident, fired shots to maintain calm.
They had to use rubber bullets to disperse the people, he explained.
According to him, the police discovered the body of an unconscious person only after the people had been scattered.
The deceased, Kofi Larbeth, 36, was pronounced dead after he had been rushed to the Dormaa-Ahenkro Presbyterian Hospital.
“We are suspecting that he died from bullet wounds,” he revealed.
The two others, who suspected wounds are: Kwame Gutan, 33 and Elliasu Gabriel, 45.
The chaos resulted in the burning of a vehicle and motorbycycle.
This is the second time chaos erupted over the burning of a motorcycle near a registration centre. In July, EC officials at the Steps to Christ registration centre at Kasoa in the Central Region abandoned their work after violence broke out.
The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, admitted firing gun shots to protects members of her campaign team.
It is also the second time someone has fallen to electoral violence in the Bono Region during the registration exercise this year.
On July 14, a 28-year-old man was stabbed to death in electoral violence at Banda.
Unidentified people stabbed the deceased, a fresh graduate from the Akim Oda Teacher Training College, in the back after he was allegedly accosted by some persons suspected to be NPP activists.
It is unclear what might have triggered the violence, but some people have attributed it to political tension between the opposition NDC and the governing NPP.
The family of the deceased has refuted claims the deceased was a political activist.
