$2m Consular Fund ready for Ghanaians abroad – Ablakwa

The Government of Ghana has allocated $2 million as a Consular Welfare Fund to support Ghanaians living abroad who find themselves in distress due to health issues, economic hardship, or situations requiring emergency evacuation.

The initiative, which has already received approval from Parliament, will be implemented through Ghana’s 71 High Commissions and Embassies across the world.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the announcement during a town hall meeting with the Ghanaian community in Abuja, Nigeria.

While assuring Ghanaians that the government remains committed to their welfare, Mr. Ablakwa issued a caution to Ghana’s diplomatic missions against any misuse of the funds.

“This fund is meant to support our compatriots in genuine distress. I will not tolerate any abuse or misapplication once it is released,” he warned.

He further encouraged Ghanaians living abroad to report their challenges through the appropriate diplomatic channels.

“The Government of Ghana will never abandon its citizens. We are here to listen, and every concern brought to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through our missions will be given the attention it deserves,” he added.

The announcement was warmly received by the community, many of whom shared concerns about being overlooked in times of crisis.
