14 Out of 17 Electoral Area Coordinators in Shama Declare Support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Political momentum is shifting in Ghana’s Western Region as fourteen out of seventeen electoral area coordinators in the Ken Electoral Area of the Shama Constituency have officially declared their support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The coordinators say their decision is rooted in Bawumia’s leadership record, economic competence, and vision for Ghana’s future.
The announcement comes as internal political activities intensify ahead of the next general elections. The coordinators—who once supported former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) primaries—say they now believe Dr. Bawumia is the right man to lead both the party and the nation into a new phase of progress.
Speaking at a community meeting in Shama, the group stated that their shift in allegiance was based on careful evaluation of the country’s current needs and the Vice President’s proven capacity in managing economic and digital transformation policies. “Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated time and again that he understands the real challenges facing ordinary Ghanaians. We believe his policies on digitalisation, economic reform, and job creation can move this nation forward,” one of the coordinators remarked.
The coordinators also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to rural development, infrastructure improvement, and inclusive governance as key reasons behind their endorsement. They argued that his leadership has consistently promoted modernization and efficiency within government operations, especially through initiatives such as the Ghana Card system, mobile money interoperability, and digital property addressing.
While 14 coordinators have openly declared their support, the remaining three are reportedly still consulting with party members and community stakeholders before making their positions public. Political observers say this division may reflect internal discussions over strategy rather than outright opposition.
The endorsements are being seen as a significant boost for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, particularly within the Western Region—a key battleground area with a mix of rural and industrial constituencies. Analysts believe local-level endorsements carry substantial weight because electoral area coordinators serve as the operational backbone of party organisation. Their support can influence voter mobilisation, communication strategies, and grassroots engagement.
A political analyst based in Takoradi noted that this development could shape the campaign dynamics in Shama and beyond. “When local coordinators move in unison, it signals a realignment of grassroots structures. For Bawumia, this could strengthen his regional network and enhance his visibility among voters who depend on coordinators for political direction,” the analyst said.
However, others caution that endorsements alone may not guarantee electoral success. Some party insiders insist that while the coordinators’ support provides momentum, effective ground campaigning and policy communication will ultimately determine who wins the constituency’s loyalty. “Endorsements help build morale,” one insider commented, “but the real work is convincing the ordinary voter.”
Meanwhile, supporters of Kennedy Agyapong and other NPP figures have downplayed the significance of the coordinators’ decision, describing it as part of the normal democratic process within the party. They maintain that unity after the primaries will be key to ensuring NPP’s success in the 2024 elections, regardless of who leads the ticket.
As the political season unfolds, the Shama constituency is expected to become one of the key focus areas for both national and regional campaign teams. For now, Dr. Bawumia’s growing support among grassroots coordinators underscores his strategic positioning within the party—and signals a renewed confidence in his leadership heading into the next election cycle.
