Ranking Member on the Youth, Sports, and Culture Committee of Parliament, Kobena Woyome, has revealed that Ghana spent $15 million on athletes’ food only during the 2023 African Games.

Woyome said a document presented to the parliamentary committee indicated that the outrageous amount was spent in 18 days.

Speaking with Joy Sports, he said the committee have demanded further details into the money spent on the games and will further investigations of the Games.

“You are spending $245 million and out of that, we got to know that a whopping amount of $15 million was used to feed athletes for 18 days,” he said.

“You realise that some of these things needed to be investigated. We wanted to know how many athletes actually made it. How many got registered? In fact, we need to get a report from the games management system because the system must be able to tell us. How many actually game and participated in the Games. All these details we would want to know.”

Kobena Woyome’s revelation comes on the back of the African Games broadcasting rights saga.

An account given by the Sports Minister suggested that the ministry paid an excess of $3 million to GBC for the coverage of the 13th African Games.

The claim has been denied by GBC’sDirector-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, who clarified that the state broadcaster earned $105,000.
