Zeepay Sues MTN Ghana for GH¢15 Million Over Corporate Mobile Money Wallet Dispute

Ghanaian fintech company Zeepay Ghana Limited and its Managing Director, Andrew Takyi-Appiah, have sued MTN Ghana’s operator, Scancom PLC, and Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL), seeking damages over a dispute concerning the registration of a corporate mobile money wallet.

The plaintiffs are seeking GH¢15 million in damages for alleged breach of contract and reputational harm, alongside other remedies they want the High Court in Accra to grant.

According to the claims outlined in the lawsuit, the dispute centres on a corporate OVA mobile money wallet with the number 0530585752. Zeepay alleges that the wallet, which was intended for the company’s business operations, was registered in the personal name of its managing director in March 2023.

The company maintains that the Know Your Customer (KYC) documentation submitted for the registration was in Zeepay’s name, rather than that of Takyi-Appiah personally.

The plaintiffs argue that the registration arrangement was inconsistent with the documentation provided and the intended corporate ownership of the wallet.

Zeepay further claims that it formally contacted MTN Ghana and MMFL on November 21, 2023, requesting that the wallet registration be corrected to reflect the company’s name.

According to the lawsuit, the company sent subsequent reminders in an attempt to resolve the matter, including communications made as recently as August 2026. The plaintiffs allege that the issue remained unresolved despite these efforts.

The dispute has also raised concerns about the potential consequences of linking a corporate financial account to an individual’s name. Takyi-Appiah claims that the registration has caused him distress and reputational damage, including his involvement in litigation connected to the wallet.

As part of the reliefs being sought, Takyi-Appiah is reportedly demanding GH¢10 million in general damages and GH¢5 million in exemplary damages. Zeepay is also seeking damages for alleged breach of contract, an order directing the defendants to correct the wallet registration and the payment of legal costs.

The plaintiffs dispute the position that Takyi-Appiah’s role as a handler of the wallet justified registering it in his personal name. They maintain that the account should have reflected Zeepay as the corporate entity for which it was established.

The lawsuit was reportedly filed on October 23, 2026, and seeks a judicial determination of the disagreement between the parties.

The case brings attention to the importance of accurate customer identification procedures and clear documentation in the provision of mobile money services, particularly where corporate accounts are involved.

However, the claims against Scancom PLC and MMFL remain allegations presented by the plaintiffs. The filing of the lawsuit does not establish liability, and the defendants’ position and the court’s eventual findings will be important in determining the outcome.
