Zebilla: Armed robbers kill driver, bolt with cash

A mix of shock, grief and anger was the mood in the Zebilla township when armed robbers believed to be of Fulani descent shot and killed the driver of a delivery truck on Thursday.

The incident which left residents of the town livid occurred at about 4:30 pm at a spot near Tilli on the Bolgatanga-Pulmakom highway.

Narrating the incident to journalists and onlookers, a terrified driver’s mate, Kwadow Isaac said they are dealers of eggs based in Abesim near Sunyani in the Bono region. According to him, they were on their return to Sunyani after successfully delivering crates of eggs to customers in Bawku.

“On reaching this bridge, two armed men riding on an unregistered motorbike ordered us to pull over. My master (driver) did just that and we were asked to lie on the floor, which we obeyed. Then one of the robbers asked us to bring the money. My master instructed me to handover the cash to them so I presented all the cash totaling Two Thousand Six Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢2,600.00). They were not convinced and kept asking for more, then my master said that was all we had… it was then he got shot”

The deceased whose name was given as Damoah Prosper is a middle aged man and driver of the delivery truck.

A third occupant of the truck sustained some injuries and was rushed to the Zebilla District Hospital for treatment.

An eyewitness, Cletus Ndeba, a welder who was almost caught in the frenzy while riding in the same direction managed to escape following the several warning shots that were fired. He could not fathom  why and how this happened in broad daylight.
