Wontumi Detention: Police intensify security at EOCO headquarters

The Ghana Police Service has deployed additional officers to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to enhance security.
However, the exact reason for the heightened security presence at the premises remains unclear.
On Thursday, May 30, 2025, members of the Minority Caucus and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the EOCO headquarters to demand a review of the bail conditions for the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who has been in custody for over 48 hours.
Wontumi is currently under investigation for his alleged involvement in multiple criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has revealed that a second phase of the investigation reportedly links Wontumi to a broader international organised crime syndicate.
Although bail has been granted, set at GH¢50 million, his legal team has not yet satisfied the conditions required for his release.
The detention of the NPP stalwart has sparked political backlash from the Minority in Parliament, who accuse EOCO and elements within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in political persecution.
