Why did you not present your running mate to me? – Asantehene questions Mahama

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has disclosed that he questioned the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, after he failed to present his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to him [Otumfuo] after he [Mahama] selected her.

Addressing a delegation led by the party’s running mate for the 2024 election, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, when they called on him at his palace on Friday, September 27, 2024, Otumfuo noted that it has over the years been the practice that the major political parties in Ghana always lead their flagbearers and running mates to his palace to greet him after their selection to greet him.

“Every time I ask her, ‘Why does the NDC cut ties with me when you are not in power?’ I ask every time because they come all the time, but when they are out of power, they don’t visit me, they don’t look for me. When Naana was selected, I was here and I heard it, but you didn’t come and introduce her to me.

“You selected her before the NPP selected NAPO [as running mate]. But you did not present her to me and allowed the NPP to rather present NAPO to me. So, when John Mahama visited me, I questioned him on why he has not presented Naana to come and greet me. So, when I met her at Cape Coast, I said if they have not presented you to me, come and let us have a dance together. Because I’ve known her for long; when she was Vice Chancellor for the University of Cape Coast, her good works and reverence for me, I’ve always acknowledged that,” the Asantehene said.

He continued to say that “Today, it is a result of politics; my son John Mahama has selected her as his running mate. I told her the first time when she was selected and came here the first time (2020 elections), to continue being humble and dedicated in her campaign. In the NPP and NDC, all that we are saying is that we want someone who will come and bring development into the nation. As I sit here, my only objective is to see Ghana develop.”
