Why Akufo-Addo sacked me as board member in 2017 – Prof. Kobby Mensah

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Professor Kobby Mensah, has disclosed the reason behind his dismissal from a government appointment under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The Associate Professor at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) revealed that he served as a board member of the Hotel Catering and Tourism Training Institute (HOTCATT) in 2017.
However, he was removed from the position after openly criticizing certain government policies.
“I went on a demonstration and I was sacked. I demonstrated against some policies and decisions, and they were not happy, so they sacked me. The appointment was a public record and not something that was secret,” he stated on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.
Prof. Mensah stressed that his appointment as GTDC CEO was purely based on competence and reiterated his commitment to public advocacy, vowing to hold the government accountable when necessary.
“It depends on what the issues are. The other was a board position, and this is a CEO role, so the contexts are different. But I won’t be deterred from speaking out when things are not going well because President Mahama has already empowered us to speak when things are wrong,” he pledged.
When asked if he feared being silenced in his current role, he dismissed such concerns, stating that President Mahama values freedom of speech.
“There are differences in leadership styles. Some people cannot take criticism—they say one thing and do another. But I see myself in the president when it comes to traits. Criticism doesn’t bother me; it makes me more conscious to do better, and I see that in the president,” he added.
