‘We’re not here to harm anyone’ – What NIB officials said during Alfred Kumi’s arrest

A video has emerged on social media platforms showing footages of the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, at his residence in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.

The video sighted by GhanaWeb, showed Alfred Kumi barefoot and casually dressed in navy blue-black shorts and a T-shirt, being escorted from his room to his house compound by armed security officials wearing bulletproof vests labeled “NIB”.

Among the voices heard in the footage was that of a distressed woman asking the officials where they were taking Kumi to.

Visibly shaken by the experience, the woman could be heard saying in a sorrowful tone, “Where are you taking him? They are taking him away.”

The officials instructed the woman filming the video to bring shoes for Kumi, who remained barefooted at the time – she complied and brought the pair of slippers as shown in the footage.

The officials attempted to prevent the person recording the video from continuing but Kumi could be seen and heard in the footage justifying the need for her to capture the exercise, stating that he did not know where he was being taken to and wanted to document it as evidence.

“She has to record this so that they will know where I am. Baby, record it because I don’t know where I’m going. Don’t be afraid, record it,” Kumi shouted.

The officials responded to this by stating that they were conducting their duties professionally and were not there to cause harm, as they sought to ease tensions and dispel any potential misconceptions.

“We are professionals, we are not here to harm anybody please. We are equally on camera and don’t want any issues. We are taking him to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters,” one of the NIB officials could be heard saying.

Alfred Kumi is currently involved in a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, seeking the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over an alleged secret meeting.

Alfred Kumi, in his petition, cited allegations of misconduct which he believes could undermine the integrity of the inquiry being conducted by the Pwamang Committee into the removal of the Chief Justice.

Kumi alleged that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.

He claimed they were overheard discussing matters related to the petition.
