We’re investigating a potential data breach on MTN – Data Protection Commission

The Data Protection Commission says it is currently investigating the incidents of potential data breaches of customers of the telecommunication network MTN.

The Commission revealed that it has taken note of a potential cybersecurity incident which resulted in unauthorised access to the personal information of some MTN customers.

According to the Commission’s MTN, the breach did not impact its core network, billing systems, or financial services infrastructure.

The Commission, in its statement, noted that although the full scope of the breach is still emerging, it is actively monitoring the situation and engaging closely with MTN Ghana, the Cybersecurity Authority, and the National Communications Authority.

It warned that should it be established that personal information of any Ghanaian or citizen has been compromised, the Commission will invoke its enforcement powers under Act 843 to hold MTN Ghana and the group accountable.

The Commission further advised Ghanaians to remain vigilant, adopt digital recommended practices, and report any suspicious activity to their service providers.
