We need in-service training – GNAT
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the government to consider investing more in retraining teachers to help improve the quality of education across the country.
According to GNAT, the support by the government which is targeted at organising in-service training and workshops for teachers to come to terms with modern teaching and learning methods will eventually lead the country to achieve the desired results it aspires to in the educational sector.
Speaking to Class News on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day today, Friday, 5 October 2018, President of GNAT, Philip Larsen, said the right to education would mean nothing without qualified teachers, hence the need for the government to act.
“We’re asking the government to invest more in retraining for us teachers so that our skills will be sharpened, our knowledge will be sharpened so that we’ll be able to deliver because we’re saying the right to education is the right to a qualified teacher, so, we need these retraining services and workshops because things have changed and things will continue to change,” he stated.
Mr Larsen added that: “The initial training given us, we were performing well but once things are changing, we should also be able to change how we do things. There is a saying that: ‘If children cannot learn the way we teach, we should teach the way they learn and, so, before we will be able to do that, there is the need for government to sharpen our skills, give us the in-service training, the workshops so that we will be able to be abreast of the time and make sure that we deliver well so that we don’t just impart knowledge but we’ll develop a human being, who, at the long run, will grow to develop the country as a whole.”
