The Provision of a police escort for members of Parliament has once again come up for discussion on the floor.

MPs are this time demanding the immediate provision of police escort following the failed assassination attempt on Nhyiaeso MP, Kennedy Kankam.

The MP and his family were held hostage at gunpoint for more than 3 hours by unknown assailants with a message that they had been sent to kill him.

Narrating the story on the floor in a statement, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated that sympathy for the MPs lactating wife caused the assailants to abort their mission.

He demanded immediate action in providing security for all MPs.

“Mr Speaker, this should bring us back to the prime concern that we have often expressed in this chamber about the security of Members of Parliament…I think going forward, the country should make a determined effort and we must be very decisive about this because we cannot continue to imperil the lives of members of parliament…I think the time has come for the state to make a decision,” Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu said.

Minority whip Muntaka Mubarak wondered why all government appointees are given police escort but same cannot be said of MPs. According to him, it is time MPs are protected by the state.

MP for Asutifi South Collins Dauda who has had his fair share of encounters with armed robbers demanded an end to the talk shop and the need for more action.
