Most of the West African migrants who fail to reach Europe eventually return to their own countries, but it can be a bitter homecoming.
In Sierra Leone, returnees are often rejected by relatives and friends. They are seen as failures, some are ostracised because they stole from their families to pay for their journey.
Many kept their plans to go to Europe a secret, and took whatever money they could, sometimes even sold the title deeds to the family land.
