Ghana Card’ll help fish out criminals – NIA
The Acting Director of Corporate Affairs at the National Identification Authority (NIA), Mr. Francis Palmdeti, has said the Authority has developed a model to help businesses verify their clients’ data through the registration for the national ID card (Ghana Card).
“There are lots of people who are anonymous in our system and it doesn’t help the telcos and banking system. People use all kinds of ID cards to register for SIM cards and commit all kinds of crime with those SIM cards and it’s important for National Security and the telcos themselves to be in the position to identify persons who use their facility,” Mr Palmdeti told Benjamin Akakpo on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Tuesday, 19 June 2018.
Through the registration process for the Ghana Card, he noted, data of Ghanaians would be collected and stored, which, in his view, will inure to the benefit of companies seeking to verify the true identities of their clients.
“Now companies will also need reliable identity and identity that is reliable in the world today is your finger print, your iris and your facials. Those three are just spot on, you can easily identify a person with that kind of biometrics.”
He identified the Lands Commission as a potential client that will need the NIA’s services in verifying people’s data when registering properties so as to decrease the upsurge in land litigation across the country.
The NIA, Mr Palmdeti explained, has reached an agreement with the banks and telcos, and that “going forward, any time they make verification onto the system about persons who transact business with them, they pay a token…”
The tokens from the banks and telcos will provide revenue for the NIA, he noted.
