The 2024 Olympic Games, being held in Paris, France, officially kicked off on Friday, July 26, 2024, following a breathtaking opening ceremony held at the River Seine.
As has become customary, the opening ceremony of the world’s biggest sporting festival affords participating countries the chance to showcase themselves to the world.
Ghana, as one of the 184 countries with athletes participating in the Paris Games, was duly represented with the country’s sportsmen and sportswomen wearing the traditional dress of fugu.
According to the media attaché to the team, Ghana had five athletes present at the ceremony, rocking the fugu wear, a black gown, and special footwear.
Overall, Ghana is being represented by eight athletes who will be competing in the 4×100 men’s relay team, men’s 100 and 200 meters, high jump, and swimming events.
Despite it being a tall order, there are considerable expectations that the 4×100 men’s relay team could achieve something monumental if they are able to sort out their perennial baton change problem.
A feature of the opening ceremony that, according to social reactions, was outstanding was the performance by legendary American singer, Celine Dion, who braved through her health struggles to deliver a beautiful performance.
In the previous 15 appearances, Ghana has won just 5 medals (4 bronze, 1 silver).
