Watch how heavy rains caused gridlock on Mallam-Kasoa Highway, leaving motorists stranded

Heavy rains on the Kasoa-Mallam Highway left hundreds of motorists stranded after flood waters made large parts of the stretch unmotorable.

Videos sighted by GhanaWeb showed that the gridlock started during rush hour on Monday (May 13) in most cases extending into the wee hours of Tuesday (May 14).

A GhanaWeb reporter on the ground described the situation on the ground as “chaotic” stressing that motorists had been forced to turn one side of the road into a single lane for vehicles coming to and leaving Kasoa.

“Commuters are stranded and most are trekking to their various destinations, while some military personnel are directing traffic.

“The recent downpour in Accra caused gridlock on the highway, forcing commercial vehicles to abandon the stretch and leave passengers stranded. As at 0:45 hrs local time the situation was still not under control,” the reporter stated.

An eyewitness who called into GhanaWeb newsroom, confirmed the role of security officers in easy the traffic situation.

“So the military men and women were coming from the Central Region to Burma Camp and because those going to Kasoa drove on the lane for those going to Accra from Kasoa, they decided to direct the traffic so that they and other commuters could pass.

“So it is not as if they were called to come and direct traffic. To be fair, there were police officers directing traffic so the military only helped to clear the side that those going to Kasoa took over,” he stated.

Explaining what he saw as the cause of the gridlock, the eyewitness, himself a driver stated: “The thing is from a place called Atala (this is a construction company located at Old Barrier).

“So after the downpour, the mud came onto the road. It is something that happens anytime it rains. So, the drivers going to Accra from Kasoa used the other side of the road, that is the lane met for those who are going to Kasoa from Accra so the dual carriage became a single lane.”
