Agya Koo, a renowned Ghanaian actor, has been actively campaigning for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, lawyer Kwabena Boateng, in the Ejisu constituency.
During his campaign efforts, he was seen using a megaphone to rally residents to support Boateng, urging them to vote for him as the second candidate on the ballot.
However, despite his efforts, the crowd responded with strong opposition, loudly and collectively chanting “Away!” in a unified manner.
The actor, who seemed unperturbed by the situation, continued to speak to the people to vote for his favourite candidate, Boateng, in the upcoming Ejisu by-election.
In a video shared by X account EDHUB and sighted by GhanaWeb, one individual was heard saying, “Agya Koo has been disgraced in Bonwire. The people are hooting at him. Away!”
Also, some sections of the crowd were heard shouting “number four on the ballot,” which refers to their former MP, Ing. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi.
What to know about the upcoming Ejisu by-election
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced that six aspirants had been cleared to contest in the upcoming Ejisu by-election scheduled for Tuesday, April 30.
The nominations closed on Thursday, April 18, with some candidates racing against time to submit their forms at the EC’s Ejisu district office in the Ashanti Region.
Leading the pack is Kwabena Boateng, the NPP parliamentary candidate, who secured the number two spot. Former MP Ing. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who is running as an independent candidate, will be number four on the ballot, while Beatrice Boakye representing the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) will appear third.
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has Esther Osei as their candidate, listed in the number one spot. The remaining two positions on the ballot are held by Gabriel Agyemang Joseph and Joseph Attakora, both running as independent candidates and designated as numbers five and six, respectively.
The full list of candidates for the Ejisu by-election is as follows:
Esther Osei (CPP), Lawyer Kwabena Boateng (NPP), Beatrice Boakye (LPG), Kwabena Owusu Aduomi (Independent), Gabriel Agyemang Joseph (Independent), and Attakorah Joseph (Independent).
The by-election, which will be held on April 30, 2024, under the management of the electoral commission, seeks to elect a parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu Constituency following the demise of the incumbent, John Kuma who doubled as the deputy finance minister on March 7, 2024.
Meanwhile, the largest opposition party, the NDC, failed to fill in a candidate for the by-election.
The three-time NPP former member of Parliament, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who is contesting as an independent candidate, is expected to give his former party a round for its money.
