Watch as fraudsters dupe young okada rider from Benin

A young man from Benin has been left stranded in Ghana after allegedly being duped by some unknown and unscrupulous persons.

In a video posted on X and viewed by GhanaWeb, a young man who appeared distraught and confused was found sitting on a pavement in an undisclosed location, holding a brown envelope.

The contents of the envelope showed white sheets with no inscriptions, as well as a small sheet of paper with some writing on it, which had been handed to him by the individuals who duped him.

A Ghanaian who encountered the stranded Beninese man said he was a motor rider locally known as Okada.

Narrating the incident, which is believed to have occurred on October 18, 2024, the Ghanaian trying to assist the stranded man explained that someone [another Ghanaian] had sought the services of the Okada rider to run an errand. The rider obliged and was handed brown envelope in return.

Furthermore, the Ghanaian deceived him into giving up his motorcycle keys to go meet his friend and asked to borrow his phone to make a call. However, unbeknownst to the rider, the man had ulterior motives and absconded with his belongings.

“…this guy [Benin national] happens to be an okada guy I met and was trying to help. He started telling me his story saying some guys met him and sought his services. The guys [fraudsters] gave him an envelope to hold. So after helping him with his rounds, the guy lied to him that he is picking up his friend and that the okada guy should give his phone to make a call.

“After the call, he took the guy’s keys as if he is picking up a friend. You know he is a foreigner from Benin and he knows nothing about Ghana. They gave him a paper and an envelope with an empty sheet inside,” he said.

The rider, unaware of what had happened, sat behind, hoping that the Ghanaian would return with his belongings.

The incident has sparked outrage over the level of wickedness shown toward the man, with some sections of Ghanaians calling on the police to find and apprehend the suspects responsible for the act.
