Volta secessionists free

A three-member panel of the Commercial Court chaired by Justice Jerome Nkrumah has thrown out the case against a group of secessionists from the Volta Region and the accused persons have subsequently been discharged.

Justice Nkrumah acted upon the request of state attorney Winifred Sarpong for the case to be discontinued on Monday, 8 July 2019.

The court had warned the prosecutors on the last adjourned date that it will be forced to discharge the accused persons if they fail to ensure that trial started.

The 85-year-old leader of the group, Mr Charles Kormi Kudjordjie, also known as Papavi Hogbedetor, and eight others, who are members of a group called Homeland Study Group Foundation and have been championing the independence of Western Togoland (Volta Region) of Ghana, were arrested on 9 May 2019 for planning to declare that part of Ghana independent.

The group wants a restoration of the pre-independent Western Togoland through a total break away from the current Republic of Ghana.

Although the leading figures of the foundation were ordered by a High Court in Ho to sign a bond of good behaviour and desist from their secessionist activities in July 2017, they convened another breakaway conference in the Volta Region on Sunday, 5 May 2019.

The police said they found T-shirts with the inscriptions: “9th May is our day” and “A Citizen of Western Togoland” in the custody of the group.
