VIDEO: Residents resist Sakumono Ramsar site phase II demolition exercise

The demolition of unauthorised structures at the Sakumono Ramsar Site resumed on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, under the supervision of Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo.
The exercise, intended to reclaim and preserve the wetland—an important flood buffer and wildlife habitat—was met with strong resistance from affected residents. Authorities warn that the illegal buildings exacerbate flooding risks in surrounding communities.
Officials maintain that residents received prior notice and were urged to comply with zoning regulations. Nonetheless, several householders, wearing red armbands and scarves, argued that their properties stand on ground not prone to flooding.
“Authorities are demolishing buildings that are nowhere near water‑logged areas,” one resident said. “We want President John Mahama to intervene and stop this immediately.”
Despite the protests, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Director‑General Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, who joined the task force on site, insisted the operation would continue.
“We cannot allow these structures to remain,” he said. “Our priority is public safety and environmental protection.”
