Video of O’Reilly student brandishing a machete in his uniform sparks public outrage

A disturbing video showing a male student from O’Reilly Senior High School showing off a machete tucked inside his school uniform, amidst other students, has sparked public outrage and discussion about indiscipline in the school and the lack of strict supervision by school authorities.

The student, captured in a video recorded by a fellow student and which has since gone viral, can be heard saying “try me and see” while his other colleagues are heard hailing and cheering him on.

The footage has sparked heavy backlash and criticisms from the public directed at the school authorities. Ghanaians have urged the Ghana Police Service to take immediate action to prevent another tragedy at the school.

Some netizens who shared their views on the video criticized the widespread indiscipline in various educational institutions and the inaction from authorities to address it.

One user said “If you take discipline from school, this is the end product… How dare you in the late 90s and early 2000s… We ain’t seeing anything yet.”

Another user, however, blamed parents for failing to instill discipline and good moral values in their children, which has contributed to the high moral decay among the youth.

“Discipline comes from home, teachers are to help build children’s mentality for future purpose. The teacher will go home to his or her family or personal life but your child will come back to you so let’s start discipline our children as soon as they start movements, talking,” the user expressed.

O’Reily SHS has been at the center of controversy this week following the fatal stabbing of a final year General Arts student by another student.

Edward Borketey Sackey, an 18-year-old final-year student of the school in Accra, was stabbed to death following a dispute with a colleague at the school.

According to reports, Edward, a General Arts student, had a physical altercation with one Godwin, a Visual Arts student, over whose father was wealthier.

The argument is said to have escalated into a fight, during which Edward was stabbed multiple times.

In an attempt to save Edward’s life, a group of students quickly left the student to find a taxi to take him to the hospital. However, he passed away shortly after arriving at the LEKMA Hospital.

The prime suspect has since been remanded into police custody for two weeks by the LA District Court.
