VIDEO: I sold ‘bofrot’ on the streets, made my son work as a security guard – McDan

Ghanaian entrepreneur Dr Daniel McKorley, widely known as McDan, has shared his remarkable journey from selling bofrot (deep-fried doughnuts) and kerosene on the streets of La to becoming one of Ghana’s most successful business leaders.

Speaking in an interview with NYDJ, the founder and CEO of the McDan Group addressed the negative perceptions surrounding wealth and success.

He expressed concern over how social media often portrays affluent individuals as corrupt rather than hardworking, which discourages young people from believing in the possibility of genuine success.

“On social media today, many people don’t believe in wealthy individuals. They assume the rich are dishonest. There’s so much resentment. People ask, ‘How can a messenger build an empire?’ or ‘How can someone who sold kerosene become successful?’ But I was once that boy selling bofrot and kerosene on the streets of La,” McDan revealed.

He argued that success is achievable through perseverance, regardless of one’s starting point in life.

McDan further revealed that, in order to instill this value in his own son, he made him work as a security guard to experience the realities of hard work and financial struggle.

“My son was a security guard, not because he wanted to be, but because I wanted him to experience how it feels. So that when he becomes the group chairman of his company and the security guard is complaining, he would understand,” he explained.

McDan also highlighted his commitment to mentoring young entrepreneurs by offering support and opportunities to those striving for success.

“In my small way, that is what I am doing, changing those I can change, helping those I can help,” he concluded.
