VIDEO: Asamoah Gyan Breaks Down in Tears as Father Is Laid to Rest in Emotional Funeral Ceremony

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan was overcome with emotion as he joined family members, friends and sympathisers to bid a final farewell to his late father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, who was laid to rest in Accra on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

The Ghanaian football legend struggled to hold back his tears during the funeral ceremony, in an emotional moment that has attracted widespread attention among football fans and social media users.

Videos circulating on social media captured Gyan visibly distressed as he stood beside his elder brother, former Ghana international Baffour Gyan, during the funeral proceedings. The two brothers gathered to pay their final respects to their father, whose influence played an important role in their lives.

Baffour Gyan also read a tribute in honour of their late father, reflecting on the family’s loss and the importance of the man who raised them.

George Gyan Baffour Mensah passed away on June 29, 2026, at the age of 82, following a short illness.

Gyan publicly announced his father’s death on July 24, sharing an emotional message that highlighted his appreciation for the support and encouragement he had received throughout his life.

In his tribute, the former Black Stars captain expressed gratitude that his father had lived long enough to witness his achievements, both on and off the football pitch.

“I’m happy you saw my greatness, Da. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (ASASE J),” Gyan wrote.

The message touched many Ghanaians, particularly football supporters who have followed his remarkable journey from his early beginnings to becoming one of the country’s most celebrated sporting personalities.

The family previously held a one-week observance for the deceased on August 21 at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools astroturf in Mallam-Gbawe.

The passing of George Gyan Baffour Mensah has also brought renewed attention to the important role parents play in supporting their children’s ambitions.

Both Asamoah and Baffour Gyan went on to establish professional football careers, representing Ghana and playing for clubs outside the country.

Asamoah Gyan, in particular, became a household name through his performances for the Black Stars, earning admiration for his goalscoring ability, determination and contributions to Ghanaian football.

His father’s encouragement and support were among the important foundations behind his journey to the highest levels of the sport.

For Gyan, the funeral was therefore more than a public ceremony. It was a deeply personal moment of saying goodbye to someone who had been part of his journey long before international recognition and sporting success.

Despite the emotional circumstances surrounding the funeral, Gyan remains one of the most accomplished footballers Ghana has ever produced.

He is the Black Stars’ all-time leading goalscorer, having scored 51 goals in 109 international appearances.

The former striker represented Ghana at three FIFA World Cup tournaments: Germany 2006, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014.

His most memorable World Cup campaign came in 2010, when he helped Ghana reach the quarter-finals. He scored three goals during the tournament and became one of the standout African players of that competition.

Gyan also holds the record as Africa’s highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, with six goals.

At club level, he enjoyed spells with several teams, including Sunderland, Rennes and Al Ain, building a career that established him as one of Africa’s most recognisable football personalities.

Following his retirement from professional football, Gyan has remained connected to the game. In September 2026, he was appointed the Black Stars’ Clubs and Player Relations Manager.

However, on November 7, the records, achievements and international recognition took a back seat.

The former Ghana captain was simply a son mourning his father.

His emotional appearance at the funeral has served as a reminder that even celebrated sporting figures experience the same pain of losing loved ones. For Ghanaians who have celebrated his achievements over the years, the moment offered a glimpse into the personal side of a football legend.

May the soul of George Gyan Baffour Mensah rest in perfect peace.
