US Embassy kidnap victims rescued in Nigeria

This was announced by a joint security service on the morning of Friday, May 19, 2023.

The victims are said to be physically unharmed.

Identities of the victims were not disclosed but the police spokesperson, Ikenga Tochukwu said that “operations are still ongoing and further details shall be communicated”.

It has also emerged that two who are believed to be linked to the gunmen involved in the attack have been arrested by the Anambra State police.

According to BBC.com, the police commissioner of the Anambra State command Echeng Echeng said that he suspects persons connected to the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He, however, had no evidence to back his claim.

On Tuesday, May 16, unknown gunmen attacked a US Embassy convoy who were bound for a US-funded flood response project in the south-eastern Nigerian state.

Seven people died in the Tuesday attack.

Out of the seven, three were US consulate officials and four were police escorts.
