US Embassy in Ghana Warns Against Visa ‘Agents’ and ‘Fixers

The Consul General at the United States Embassy in Ghana, Elliot Fertik, has issued a strong warning against the use of “agents” or “intermediaries” for visa applications, emphasizing that the entire process can be completed independently and securely through the embassy’s official website.

Fertik unequivocally stated that anyone who promises to assist with a visa application for a fee is either being dishonest or engaging in fraudulent activity. He highlighted that relying on such consultants often contributes significantly to the high rate of unsuccessful visa applications.

“They are Lying, and They are Ripping You Off”

“I will say, in general, that the visa application process is something you can do by yourself. Visa fixers claim they have influence over the process and demand thousands of dollars, promising they can guarantee you a visa because they know someone inside the Embassy,” Fertik was quoted by myjoyonline.com. “Let me be clear, they are lying, and they are ripping you off. It is probably not legitimate.”

He further stressed that by personally applying through the embassy’s official website, applicants significantly reduce the risk of submitting incomplete or inaccurate documents, a common reason for visa denials.

Direct Application Promotes Accuracy and Success

Fertik urged all potential applicants to carefully follow the instructions provided on the embassy’s website and underscored the critical importance of obtaining accurate information directly from the U.S. Embassy’s official channels.

“You can complete the process on our website, and there are also phone numbers and email addresses available there for assistance if you encounter any difficulties,” he added, reinforcing the accessibility of official support for legitimate applicants.

The Consul General’s remarks serve as a crucial reminder to the Ghanaian public to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to individuals or groups who make false promises regarding visa procurement. The most reliable and secure path to a U.S. visa, he reiterated, is direct application through official channels.
