Uruguay penalty miss still haunts me – Gyan

Asamoah Gyan, captain of Ghana’s senior national team, Black Stars, has said that his inability to convert a penalty for Ghana at the 2010 World Cup against Uruguay is one of his biggest regrets in his whole football career.

The Kayserispor forward said if he had the opportunity, he would have reversed the hands of time so he will be able to convert that spot kick.

“It’s been haunting me once a while, but it has made me a strong man. I wish I could get the opportunity to take that penalty again,” the former Sunderland striker said in an interview with Countryman Songo on Asempa FM’s ‘Fire for Fire’ programme on Thursday, 22 November 2018.

If Gyan had converted that penalty, Ghana would have progressed to the semi-final stage of the tournament, which was eventually won by Spain.

Gyan is Africa’s all-time top scorer at the Fifa World Cup with six goals.

He has scored 51 goals so far for the national team, making him Ghana’s all-time top scorer.
