Unaccredited schools ‘dishing’ out honorary degrees to be clamped down

The National Accreditation Board (NAB) says it has alerted the security agencies to clamp down on the activities of institutions with doubtful and questionable existence coming into the country to award honorary doctorate degrees to individuals.

It said the board has noticed with great concern the spate of conferment of honorary degrees and professorial titles on some personalities by some unaccredited institutions, accredited institutions unqualified to award degrees on their own or other institutions with doubtful credentials.

A statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the NAB, Dr Kingsley Nyarko on Tuesday noted that the board had been reliably informed that another of such unaccredited institution -Rescue Mission Theological University which had scheduled to confer such honorary degrees on some gullible and unsuspecting individuals.

Not accredited

For the avoidance of doubt, it named institutions that have neither been accredited in Ghana nor in their home countries by the recognised accrediting bodies as Day Spring Christian University of Mississippi, Pan African Clergy Council and Bible College, Global Centre for Transformational Leadership, World Council for Evangelical Clergy, Peristrofi Word Honorary International and the King of Kings World Foundation.

The rest are the King of Kings Bible College, Riches Theological College and Clergy council, Bishop Gilson University, International Christian University and the European American University.

“The NAB by this statement is advising all foreign tertiary education institutions with the intent to confer any academic awards on personalities in Ghana to seek its initial approval. Further, we wish to reiterate our resolve and commitment to work with the security agencies and all stakeholders to put a stop to these embarrassing and worrying activities by these unscrupulous groups, which cast a slur or disdain on our international reputation,” it said.
