UGMC opens today
The University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) will be opened today, Wednesday, 18 July 2018.
This comes more than a year after the erstwhile Mahama government commissioned the first phase of the facility.
The decision to keep the medical center under lock at a time hospitals are overflowing with emergency patients sparked public outrage with several Ghanaians questioning the wisdom in keeping the facility closed.
Government had cited a technical reason for the delay in putting the hospital to use but it later emerged the delay was partly due to a tussle between the government and the University of Ghana over control of the $217 million medical center.
Government this week approved an additional €47.1 million euros for the phase two of the medical centre.
Phase two of the project will equip the hospital with facilities such as a VIP maternity and private floor, cardio-vascular and open-heart surgery unit; and a neurosurgery unit.
