Nigeria and Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi turns 37 today (Monday, April 22).

Mikel is arguably one of the most decorated Nigerian players of all-time.

He began his career in Plateau United in the NPFL before securing a move to Norwegian club Lyn at the age of 17 in 2004.

Two years later, he made a controversial move to Chelsea after Manchester United claimed they had already signed him.

He stayed at Chelsea for 11 years where he won multiple titles, including two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

After Chelsea, Mikel Obi had brief spells with Tianjin TEDA, Middlesbrough, Trabzonspor and Stoke City.

At the international level, Mikel donned the Super Eagles shirt for 14 years, between 2005 and 2019.

He won 91 caps for Nigeria, scoring 6 goals in the process. The highlight of Mikel’s international career came in 2013 when he played an instrumental role in Nigeria’s 3rd AFCON triumph in South Africa.

He called time on his illustrious professional career in 2022 at the age of 35.
