Two young teachers shot dead

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says he is devastated by the killing of two teachers in Ga-Rankuwa, north of the Pretoria CBD.

The teachers, from Lekgalong Primary School in Ga-Rankuwa Zone 1, were murdered on Monday.

According to the education department, the female teachers, aged 26 and 27, were allegedly shot dead by the partner of one of the women on Monday at approximately 15:00.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said three bodies – two women and a man – were discovered in a room in Ga-Rankuwa.

“Police were called by community members who heard gunshots inside the room. Police responded swiftly and found the room locked. Police broke the door open and found three bodies with gunshot wounds,” he said.

Masondo said:

It is suspected that the male shot the two females and shot himself.

He said police had opened two cases of murder and an inquest docket.

The Gauteng Department of Education said it would provide psychosocial support to the affected families and the school community.

“We are devastated at this gruesome act of criminality that has taken the lives of two of our youngest and brightest educators. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and all affected members of the Lekgalong Primary School community,” Lesufi said.
