Two perish in galamsey pit at Karlo

Two people, at separate times, have lost their lives in galamsey pits at Karlo in the Suaman District of the Western North Region.

Eric Armah, the Assembly Member for the Karlo Electoral Area, told the GNA in an interview that a 32-year-old illegal miner known as “Money Fresh” went to an abandoned galamsey pit after work to bathe, only to fall into the pit and die in the process.

He said one Madam Abaawa Mary, 38 years old, also lost her life when she fell into a galamsey pit while fetching water near the mining site.

The Assembly Member expressed concern about the negative effects of galamsey in the area, noting that the activity not only destroys water bodies but also leads to loss of lives.

He said illegal mining has polluted water bodies such as the Anwhiafutu, Bobo, Bia, and Sui rivers, making it difficult for communities to access potable water.

He, therefore, appealed to National Security to help combat the menace.

The deceased have since been deposited at the Enchi Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
