Court orders Bolt to pay GH¢1.9 million compensation to lecturer for identity theft

The Adentan Circuit Court has ruled that Bolt Ghana Limited must pay GH¢1.9 million to Justice Noah Adade, a lecturer and CEO of a software solutions company, for failing to detect the theft of his identity, which was then used by a driver.

Justice Noah Adade, an Information Technology Consultant, filed a GH¢2 million lawsuit against Bolt Ghana Limited, alleging negligence.

He claimed that Bolt breached the Data Protection Act by using his personal data for one of its drivers without proper verification.

Adade argued that the company failed to confirm the ownership of the vehicle with registration number GR 2052-22 before registering it.

In his lawsuit, Adade asked the court to instruct Bolt to remove his personal data from its database and requested compensation for the unauthorised use of his information.

He described an incident in August 2022 when he booked a ride on the Bolt platform and was surprised to see his name and image displayed as the driver.

When he confronted the actual driver, who he knew, the driver apologised.

He stressed that Bolt Ghana Limited had a duty of care to be diligent and thorough in its operations, a duty it did not fulfill.

The court ruled in favor of Adade, ordering Bolt to compensate him for the damages caused.
