Trending GH: Fans blame referee for Nigeria’s defeat to Argentina

It was a bittersweet moment for fans who watched Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2018 World Cup in Ghana.

Whiles some of the football fans felt robbed and upset at referee Cuneyt Cakir’s decision not to award a deserving penalty to the Super Eagles, others were excited that Messi finally showed leadership to led Argentina to the next phase of the tournament.

The Super Eagles toiled their way back into the World Cup Group D match after Victor Moses scored from a penalty spot to cancel out Lionel Messi’s stunning opener.
But the West African side thought they deserved a second penalty when Argentina’s defender Marcos Rojo controlled the ball with his hand after heading the ball in the air.

After Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo wasted a glorious opportunity to score from 14 yards out, Mikel Obi made a desperate appeal for a penalty, with referee Cuneyt Cakir consulting VAR but needing only one replay to dismiss the claim.

Marcos Rojo went ahead to score a fine late volley to send Argentina through to the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup with a dramatic victory over Nigeria in St Petersburg.
Ghanaweb TV caught up with some of the fans who watched the game at Epo’s pub and on the Oxford Street in Accra after the game.
