Top 10 African passports that have free visa to Europe

It’s important to clarify that “free visa to Europe” is a bit of a misnomer, especially when referring to the Schengen Area. The vast majority of African countries do require a Schengen visa to enter most European countries that are part of the Schengen Area (which includes most of Western, Central, and Southern Europe).

However, there are a few African passports that enjoy visa-free access to some European countries, often those outside the Schengen Area, or specific circumstances within the Schengen Area (like having a valid visa from another major country). Also, diplomatic and official passports often have broader visa-free access than ordinary passports.

Based on current general information (which can change frequently, so always double-check with official embassy websites before travel), here are some African passports that offer the most visa-free travel opportunities to various European countries, including non-Schengen ones, and generally have higher visa-free scores globally:

Top African Passports with the Most Visa-Free Access to European (and other) Countries:

While a definitive “Top 10 for Europe specifically” is hard to create due to the nuances of Schengen vs. non-Schengen and individual agreements, these African passports consistently rank highest for global mobility, including better access to some European destinations:

  1. Seychelles: This passport consistently ranks as the strongest in Africa, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a significant number of countries worldwide, including several in Europe (e.g., Schengen Area for short stays).
  2. Mauritius: Another highly-ranked African passport, providing good visa-free access to many countries, including some European nations.
  3. South Africa: While requiring a Schengen visa for the main Schengen zone, South African passport holders do have visa-free access to some European countries outside the Schengen Area (e.g., Ireland, some Balkan countries) and several non-European destinations.
  4. Botswana: Offers good global mobility, with visa-free access to a fair number of countries, including some in Europe.
  5. Lesotho: Similar to Botswana, it provides decent visa-free travel options.
  6. Eswatini (Swaziland): Offers similar visa-free benefits to Lesotho and Botswana.
  7. Namibia: Has a respectable number of visa-free destinations globally.
  8. Kenya: While still needing a Schengen visa, Kenya is actively pursuing more visa-free agreements and has some existing ones in Europe (e.g., some Balkan countries).
  9. Malawi: Offers a moderate level of global visa-free access.
  10. Gambia: While not as strong as the top few, Gambia has made efforts towards visa-free travel for certain regions.

Important Considerations:

  • Schengen Area vs. Non-Schengen Europe: Most of the “free visa to Europe” questions refer to the Schengen Area (29 European countries that have abolished passport and any other type of border control at their common borders). As of my last update, no African passport provides full, unrestricted visa-free access to the entire Schengen Area for ordinary passport holders. For almost all African citizens, a Schengen visa is required for short stays.
  • Specific European Countries outside Schengen: Countries like Ireland, the UK (with ETA for some nationalities now), and some Balkan countries (Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia) have their own visa policies, and some African passports do have visa-free access to these individually.
  • Diplomatic/Official Passports: As mentioned, diplomatic and official passports from many African countries often have much broader visa-free access to European nations.
  • Visa-on-Arrival/e-Visa: Some countries may offer “visa-on-arrival” or “e-visa” which are not strictly “visa-free” but simplify the entry process considerably.
  • Changes in Policy: Visa policies are dynamic and can change without much notice due to diplomatic relations, security concerns, and other factors. Always verify the latest visa requirements with the embassy or consulate of the European country you plan to visit before making any travel arrangements.
