Tinubu seeks Senate approval to sack suspended INEC RECs

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve the dismissal of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners of Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states.

The affected RECs are Ike Uzochukwu of Abia State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari of Adamawa, and Nura Ali of Sokoto, who were suspended over alleged misconduct during the 2023 general election.

Tinubu’s request was contained in a letter read by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Wednesday.

“In accordance with Section 157, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, I hereby request the Senate to consider and vote for the termination of the appointments of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners of Adamawa, Sokoto and Abia states.

“The Senate is invited to note that the three Resident Electoral Commissioners have been suspended for misconduct since March 2022 before the advent of the current administration. I trust that the Senate will consider this request expeditiously. Please, accept, distinguished senators and Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the letter read

Tinubu urged the lawmakers to act swiftly on the request and is expected to nominate replacements for the vacant positions soon.
