Queen Elizabeth II Honours Ghanaian Veteran With Commonwealth Points Of Light Award

 

 

Private (Pte) Joseph Hammond, the 95-year-old veteran who embarked on a 14 mile walk to raise funds for frontline workers, has been honoured by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with a Commonwealth Points of Light Award.

The Commonwealth Points of Light Award recognises outstanding individual volunteers across the commonwealth, consisting of those positively making a change within their communities.

Pte Hammond in his typical style was surprised and very appreciative of the honour; “I was overwhelmed and filled with joy when I heard I have been chosen by Her Majesty the Queen. This would linger in my memory forever. I wish to thank the mother of the commonwealth, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all those who have made this possible.” – he added.

President of the GUBA Enterprise Dentaa Amoateng MBE and Founder of Forces Help Africa, Derek Cobbinah, supporters of this initiative added;

“We are incredibly proud of Pte Hammond. Through his hard work, determination and consistency, he has gained this astounding honour from Her Majesty the Queen. GUBA Enterprise and Forces Help Africa are glad to have been able to support, promote and participate in this initiative.”

The 14 mile walk which span over seven days, aimed to raise funds for the procurement of PPEs and safety equipment for health workers tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also go towards the aid of vulnerable veterans. Pte Hammond has currently raised over £35,000 towards COVID-19.
