The Jostling For Regional Capitals Must Cease Since It Can Mar The Beautiful Dream Realized

Under-development threw a ghastly reality on the shriveled lands of the six zones that clamored for separate administrative boundaries from the ones they have been integral members of all these years.

The creation of the six regions did not come by a form of remarkable coincidence. It was premised not only on the manifesto pledge of the then opposition New Patriotic Party but also on demands made by the people living in these enclaves.

The processes leading to the creation of the regions were toilsome if not backbreaking, with constant strenuous efforts from certain quarters to scuttle the entire process.

These effortful toils would survive the onslaught from those who, for some inexplicable reasons, had opposed the creation of the regions. December 27 would give birth to these regions as the people resoundingly voted ‘YES’ to endorse the creation of the regions.

No sooner had the results of the referendum been announced than the jostling for regional capitals started. Several write-ups in circulation have sought to argue in favor of citing the capitals in one area or the other.

These write-ups are livid with passion, with some threatening to resist any attempt at citing the administrative capitals in areas other than their preferred choice.

Though these battles for supremacy are expected, the combative manner in which people are trying to bulldoze their views through the minds of readers and the government of the day is troubling, to say the least.

While the scrambling for regional capitals to be cited in certain areas may not be destitute of substance, it is too sudden for such demands to be made.

The troubled clouds have passed off, the regions will soon be given the necessary liberties to operate as independent areas, so nothing should be introduced to impede the progress of the process.

These cries for regional capitals to be cited in preferred areas amount to taking the wind out of the sail of the government.

Whilst lobbying, we should not lose sight of the fact that not all of our expectations will be met since one town out of the many towns within an enclave will get the endorsement as the administrative capital.

These hideous and discordant wails resounding from many quarters within these six zones over the citing of regional capitals should cease. It is premature to be fighting over regional capitals when the regions are yet to be officialized.

Things will fall in place naturally. People should stand down on these calls. The right places will be chosen when the time comes. We put our trust in President Akufo-Addo in getting this pledge fulfilled, we should trust him in the next phase of this process.
