September has been a rollercoaster ride for the country especially due to the back-to-back protests that happened in the ninth month alone.
From the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demo to the #StopGalamsey protests by the Democracy Hub, September has seen numerous demonstrations that will resonate in the country’s memory for a long time.
GhanaWeb takes a look at all the protests that rocked the country as the month of September wraps up:
1. Enough is Enough Demo
To drum home their concerns and demands, thousands of Ghanaians, mostly supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), thronged the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, at Circle in Accra, on September 17, 2024, as part of the party’s ‘Enough Is Enough’ demonstration against the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
The demonstrators were clothed in NDC colors as well as red and black apparel to demonstrate against the EC’s objection to an independent audit of the voters register for the 2024 elections.
The demonstration was held in all 16 regions of the country, with many supporters of the party joining the protests.
2. Democracy Hub Demo
Themed #StopGalamsey and #OccupyJulorbiHouse, the protest sought to demand the cessation of galamsey activities in the country and to protest against bad governance and economic hardships.
The three-day protest was however cut short when day 2 of the protest was marred by violence, leading to the arrest of the protesters.
Protesters removed police blockades, burned party paraphernalia, and took keys from a police van in an attempt to prevent the police from towing their food truck.
The police have charged some arrested protesters with committing unlawful acts and breaching public peace, with the court remanding them for 2 weeks.
3. VRA Staff
The Volta River Authority (VRA) staff in Akosombo in the Eastern Region, on Thursday, September 26, 2024, embarked on a demonstration to express their strong opposition to a proposed draft bill.
The bill aims to merge VRA with Bui Power Authority, combine the Electricity Company of Ghana, (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company ( NEDCO), and establish an independent thermal Power Authority from the VRA thermal plant.
4. A Rocha Ghana Protest
The conservation organization embarked on a street protest on September 24, 2024, against the activities of galamsey.
They demanded that the government takes action to address the galamsey menace and protect the water bodies and forest reserves.
Clad in red attire, they held placards with inscriptions as they marched through the streets.
Worth mentioning is that there is a planned #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamsey demonstration from October 3 to 5.
