Tears as KNUST student allegedly murdered by boyfriend is buried

Thousands of mourners gathered at the Jehovah Shammah Assemblies of God Church in Ashongman Estates, Accra, to bid an emotional farewell to Joana Deladem Yabani, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend in February.

The atmosphere was filled with sorrow as family, friends, schoolmates, church members, and dignitaries came together for the final funeral rites.

Emotions ran high as tributes poured in for the young woman whose life was tragically cut short.

Representatives from the KNUST student body and the Achimota Old Students Association joined the bereaved family in paying their respects.

Also present were leaders from various Assemblies of God branches, clergy, and security officials, including the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Teye Cudjoe.

In honour of Joana, the JDAY Foundation was launched during the service.

The foundation aims to raise awareness and combat gender-based violence and tragic relationship-related crimes. It seeks to ensure that Joana’s story sparks lasting change and protects others from similar fates.

Joana, a bright student, was found dead near the university’s Rehabilitation and Disability Centre on February 27, 2025.

Her boyfriend, Daniel Tuffour, is currently standing trial in connection with her death, which remains surrounded by many unanswered questions.

Joana is survived by her parents, Dr. John B.K. Yabani and Mrs. Rejoice Amakie Yabani, and eight siblings.

A thanksgiving service to celebrate her life and legacy is scheduled for April 13 at the same church.
