Teachers begin strike today over unpaid salaries
Teachers across the country’s public schools are this morning beginning a strike to demand payment of their salary arrears.
Three unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers(NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers(CCT) had earlier given Education officials a December 5, 2019 deadline to pay the salaries dating back to 2012.
The Ghana Education Service(GES) in a statement noted it had already paid some of the teachers.
The General Secretary of GNAT Thomas Musah in an interview said only the payment of outstanding allowance will get the teachers back to the classroom.
The strike action will affect teaching from primary school to the senior high and technical schools level.
Terminal examination is scheduled to start today(Monday) but with the strike, the children may not well have any examination.
