British national arrested at KIA for smuggling cannabis

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a British national, Naomi Mbelu, for attempting to smuggle cannabis through Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

Mbelu, who arrived in Accra on March 22, 2025, at approximately 12:20 p.m., was intercepted after disembarking from Ethiopian Airlines Flight 921. She had travelled from Bangkok, Thailand, with a layover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Upon screening, NACOC officials discovered 41 black polythene-sealed packages in her luggage, which later tested positive for cannabis.

The total weight of the seized substances was 21.38 kilograms.

Further investigations led to the arrest of two accomplices: Joseph Asoa, who had arranged a visa on arrival for Mbelu and was assisting her at the airport, and Isaac Anum Sowah, the driver who arrived to pick her up.

All three suspects are currently in NACOC custody, while the seized drugs remain under investigation.

Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to combating drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports of entry.
