Mobile money operator, 39, killed by armed robbers

A 39-year-old mobile money operator, Promise Dayi, has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers at Asylum Down in Accra.

The incident occurred last Monday, at around 8 p.m., opposite the Iran Clinic where Dayi had been transacting his business for months.

Dayi, who is popularly known in the area as Atsu, was alleged to have been shot by three unknown men who were on an unregistered motorbike.

Immediately after he fell down, the gunmen allegedly took his bag which contained money and a phone before fleeing the scene.

Dayi was rushed to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police report

The Nima Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Abraham Acquaye, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, said the Regional Police Command had taken over the investigation of the case.

He said the police was working with some eyewitnesses to track down the gunmen.

Mr Acquaye said the police got the information of the killing of the mobile phone operator soon after the incident.

“When we got there, the gunmen had already fled and Dayi’s blood was all over the place. He was shot at the right side of his chest,” he said.

Mr Acquaye said Dayi died on his way to the hospital, adding that a delegation was immediately sent to the deceased’s family to convey the news.

He said the police recovered two empty cartridges, two jackets, a hat, a cap and a pair of slippers at the crime scene.
