The bizarre story of how Daniel Amartey sneaked out of meeting to avoid being sold to Turkish club

Huseyin Yucel, a spokesperson for Turkish club Besiktas, has revealed the extent to which Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey went to avoid being transferred from the club to an Arabian club.

Yucel told reporters in Turkey that the club, determined to get the Ghanaian center-back off their books, had agreed on a deal with a Saudi Arabian club.

However, Amartey was not interested in moving to Saudi Arabia and went to extreme lengths to prevent the transfer from going through.

He stated that Amartey, who was determined to stay in Europe, sneaked out of the club’s headquarters to avoid being transferred to Saudi Arabia.

“Amartey is a strange person,” he said. “We made an agreement with a team from Saudi Arabia, but he did not get on the plane. We agreed with Eyupspor, and he escaped through the back door of our facilities.

“He [Amartey] said, ‘I will go to Germany or England.’ When he was told ‘the transfer window is closed,’ he said ‘how will it close?'”

Daniel Amartey joined Besiktas on a free transfer last season after being released by Leicester City.

The Ghanaian center-back, however, had his first season blighted by injuries, and the club was willing to cut their losses on him in the transfer window.
