Claims over police escort for Gambia team trigger social media dispute in Ghana

A social media dispute has emerged between Senegalese and Ghanaian media personalities following claims about the treatment of The Gambia’s national football team ahead of its Group C encounter with Ghana in Accra.

The controversy began after Senegalese journalist Bamba raised concerns about the arrangements made for the Gambian delegation upon its arrival in Ghana.

In a post on social media, Bamba alleged that the Gambian team was not provided with a police escort from the airport to its hotel or from the hotel to the Accra Sports Stadium.

He also claimed that the team encountered difficulties upon arriving at the stadium and was allegedly not given access to a dressing room.

According to the journalist, the situation required the Gambian players to change elsewhere ahead of the match. He called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter and ensure that visiting national teams receive appropriate treatment.

The allegations quickly generated reactions from Ghanaian media personnel, with some disputing the account presented by the Senegalese journalist.

Ghanaian journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai challenged aspects of Bamba’s claims, providing a different account of the arrangements made for the Gambian delegation.

Abdulai said Ghanaian officials had assisted the Gambian delegation with visa-related arrangements and provided an escort to the team’s hotel.

He also disputed the claim concerning dressing-room access, saying he personally assisted Gambian media representatives in accessing the dressing room at the stadium.

The contrasting accounts have since fuelled a social media exchange, with the two sides presenting different versions of events surrounding the Gambian team’s preparations for the fixture.

Bamba maintained that the concerns raised should be addressed by the football authorities, arguing that visiting teams should receive appropriate security and logistical arrangements during international competitions.

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) had not publicly issued a detailed response to the allegations at the time of the report, leaving the competing accounts unresolved.

The controversy came ahead of an important Group C fixture between Ghana and The Gambia. The Gambian side entered the encounter after recording a 2–1 victory over Somalia, while Ghana was coming off a 2–0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire.

The dispute has drawn attention to the logistical responsibilities of host associations during international fixtures, particularly regarding security, transportation and facilities provided to visiting teams.

While the claims have generated considerable discussion online, the different accounts mean that the circumstances surrounding the alleged arrangements have not been independently established.

The matter could require clarification from the football authorities involved, particularly if the Gambian federation decides to formally raise concerns about the treatment of its delegation.
