Seven teams have secured places in the intercontinental playoffs for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with Ghana and South Africa becoming the latest countries to book their places.
The intercontinental playoff tournament will determine the final three teams that qualify for the Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Brazil in 2027.
The seven teams currently confirmed are Ghana, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, Venezuela, Ecuador and Papua New Guinea.
Ghana secured its place after the Black Queens defeated Côte d’Ivoire in their decisive WAFCON playoff encounter. The result kept Ghana’s hopes of returning to the Women’s World Cup alive after missing out on automatic qualification.
South Africa also booked its place after overcoming Nigeria, giving the two African nations another opportunity to compete for a place at the global tournament.
The Asian representatives are Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei, who earned their playoff positions through the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualification process.
South America is represented by Venezuela and Ecuador, while Papua New Guinea secured Oceania’s playoff position.
The intercontinental playoff tournament will be particularly important because only three teams from the competition will ultimately earn tickets to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The tournament will be organised in different stages. The preliminary phase will involve teams from several confederations, while some higher-ranked teams will receive direct entry into the final phase.
The final phase will feature six teams, with the winners of three knockout pathways earning the remaining World Cup places. Teams will be ranked according to the applicable FIFA Women’s World Ranking before the draw.
For Ghana, reaching the intercontinental playoffs provides the Black Queens with another chance to return to the biggest stage in women’s football.
The team will now have to prepare for a difficult playoff campaign against opponents from different parts of the world. Success in the competition would secure Ghana a place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
South Africa will also be hoping to take advantage of the opportunity after securing its playoff position.
The remaining playoff places are expected to be filled after the completion of qualifying competitions in other confederations. This means the final composition of the tournament is yet to be determined.
The qualification format gives teams that missed out on direct qualification another route to the World Cup. For Ghana and South Africa, the playoff route therefore represents an important second opportunity to achieve their World Cup ambitions.
The 2027 Women’s World Cup is expected to feature 32 teams, with Brazil preparing to host the tournament.
As more qualifying competitions reach their conclusion, attention will turn to the final list of playoff participants and the eventual draw.
For now, Ghana, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, Venezuela, Ecuador and Papua New Guinea have secured their positions, leaving three places still to be determined.
