MP Ekow Vincent Assafuah Criticizes Composition of Committee Investigating Chief Justice

Ekow Vincent Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region, has expressed strong concerns over the impartiality of the committee established by the government to investigate petitions against the Chief Justice.

In a statement dated April 22, 2025, Assafuah argued that the committee is politically biased, noting that three out of its five members have known political affiliations, making them unfit to deliver an objective assessment.

“Let’s not pretend we don’t see what’s happening,” he said. “This is a deliberate move. Of the five members appointed to probe the Chief Justice, three—Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah—have clear partisan ties.”

He warned that suspending the Chief Justice based on perceived political alignment is troubling and dangerous for Ghana’s democratic future.

“If one government can remove a Chief Justice and stack the panel with loyalists, what stops future administrations from going even further? What kind of precedent are we setting?”

Assafuah emphasized that the current process appears less about justice and more about political revenge.

“We support accountability. But when it becomes selective and politically charged, it’s no longer justice—it’s retribution. Today it’s the Chief Justice; tomorrow it could be an Electoral Commissioner, a journalist, or a public servant who resists political pressure. This isn’t about truth—it’s about weakening the judiciary and expanding executive power.”
