The Accra High Court has granted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) a warrant to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The warrant was issued after EOCO told the court that efforts to secure the legislator’s voluntary attendance in connection with an ongoing investigation had been unsuccessful.
The anti-graft agency also raised concerns that documents relevant to its investigation could potentially be concealed, altered or destroyed. It therefore sought judicial authority to arrest the MP and search for and seize documents considered relevant to the case.
The development marks a further escalation in a matter that has been ongoing since February 2026.
EOCO says it is investigating alleged financial irregularities involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited. According to the agency, Baffour Awuah was invited twice in February in connection with his role as Senior Partner of Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, the law firm engaged by SIC Life to assist in recovering funds.
Baffour Awuah has disputed EOCO’s account. He has maintained that the February invitation was directed to the senior partner of his law firm in relation to the firm’s client, SIC Life Savings and Loans.
The MP has said that by the time the invitation was received, he had become a Member of Parliament and referred the matter to the Clerk to Parliament for advice.
He further stated that a representative of the law firm subsequently cooperated with EOCO on three occasions in March and April and submitted a written statement to the agency.
EOCO, however, maintains that the MP did not honour its invitations and that the attempted arrest on September 23 was part of efforts to secure his attendance.
The September 23 incident occurred at the Accra High Court Complex shortly after Baffour Awuah had appeared as counsel for a client. The attempted arrest generated criticism, including from the Ghana Bar Association, which raised concerns about the manner in which the action was carried out at the court premises.
The financial matter at the centre of the investigation relates to funds that SIC Life Savings and Loans had invested with the now-defunct Equity Savings and Loans.
Baffour Awuah has explained that the investment was initially about GH¢3.5 million but that the amount had increased to approximately GH¢14 million with interest after the recovery process.
EOCO has not publicly detailed all the allegations under investigation. Reports have referred to questions surrounding legal fees and payments allegedly connected to the recovery of the funds. These claims remain subject to investigation and have not been established as wrongdoing by the MP.
The latest court order gives EOCO judicial authority to proceed with the arrest and the search-and-seizure measures authorised by the court.
The case remains ongoing, with the competing accounts of EOCO and Baffour Awuah forming part of the continuing legal and public debate surrounding the investigation.
