The elder sister of former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has died.
The deceased, identified as Regina Wiafe Antwi, was reported to have passed away while her brother remains in prison.
Former NPP Ashanti Regional Communications Officer Paul Yandoh disclosed the death and linked it to the emotional distress he said Regina experienced following Wontumi’s arrest and imprisonment.
Speaking on Nhyira FM, Yandoh claimed that Regina collapsed after her brother was incarcerated and later died. He also said the family had been deeply affected by Wontumi’s imprisonment.
However, no independent medical information establishing the cause of Regina Wiafe Antwi’s death has been publicly disclosed. The reported connection between her collapse and her brother’s incarceration remains an account attributed to Yandoh.
The family has scheduled Wednesday, September 30, 2026, for the one-week observance of the late Regina Wiafe Antwi at Kuntenase in the Ashanti Region.
Her death comes at a difficult period for the Wontumi family, as Chairman Wontumi remains in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison following his conviction in a case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.
Wontumi was sentenced by an Accra High Court to 20 years in prison after being convicted over offences relating to mining activities at the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. The sentences imposed on the two counts are to run concurrently, according to reports.
Wontumi has since appealed both his conviction and sentence. His lawyers reportedly filed the appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026.
Yandoh also claimed that Wontumi’s father had been significantly affected by his son’s imprisonment and was struggling emotionally following the development.
The death of Regina Wiafe Antwi has therefore added another difficult moment for the family, with relatives and sympathisers expected to gather at Kuntenase for the one-week observance.
As preparations continue for the customary gathering, further funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family.
