WATCH: CCTV Footage Helps Police Identify Suspects in Agona Nkwanta Gold Buyer Murder
The Western Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer at Agona Fie, near Agona Nkwanta in Ghana’s Western Region.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m., when armed men reportedly attacked a gold-buying shop. The owner, identified as Seth Kobina, was shot during the incident and rushed to the Agona Nkwanta Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the police, preliminary investigations, including a review of CCTV footage from the area, helped investigators identify 29-year-old Emmanuel Amponsah, also known as “Vandam,” as the alleged leader of the group involved in the robbery.
Amponsah was arrested on August 21 at a guest house in Agona Nkwanta. Police said a search conducted on him resulted in the recovery of items that have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
However, after his arrest, Amponsah reportedly became ill and was taken to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for medical attention. He was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival. Police have not publicly stated the cause of his death.
Investigators continued their work following his death and subsequently arrested four other suspects believed to be connected to the robbery.
They were identified as 47-year-old Christopher Seyiri, alias “Cross and Die”; 20-year-old Bashiru Ibrahim; 30-year-old Thomas Odoom, alias “Wale”; and Isaac Quayeson, alias “Last Burial.”
Seyiri, Ibrahim and Odoom were arrested within the Agona Nkwanta area, while Quayeson was arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region.
Police said further evidence was recovered during a search of Quayeson’s residence. The items have been taken into custody as investigators continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the robbery and the death of the gold buyer.
A significant development in the investigation reportedly came from information provided by Quayeson. Police said he identified the late Amponsah as the person who allegedly shot and killed Kobina during the robbery.
Quayeson also reportedly identified Thomas Odoom as one of the individuals captured in the CCTV footage from the incident.
The CCTV footage has consequently become an important part of the investigation as police work to establish the identities and alleged roles of the individuals involved.
The four surviving suspects are currently assisting the police with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other people believed to have been connected to the incident.
The case has attracted attention because of the circumstances surrounding the death of the gold buyer and the use of CCTV evidence in tracing suspects. Gold-buying businesses in mining communities can face security concerns because of the valuable commodities and cash often associated with their operations.
For residents and business owners in Agona Nkwanta and surrounding communities, the incident has renewed concerns about security and the protection of commercial establishments.
The police investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against the surviving suspects have not yet been tested in court. Authorities are expected to continue gathering evidence and pursuing other suspected accomplices as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery and murder.
The Western Regional Police Command has indicated that efforts will continue until all persons connected to the incident are identified and brought before the law.
